Notify MCERA if Your Medicare Part B Premium Increased

04/05/2017

Effective January 1, 2017, Medicare Part B premiums increased for most people and the amount of increase is not the same for every person.

Social Security and Medicare do not report premium information about individual retirees to MCERA.

If your premium increased in January please let us know and we will increase the amount of your monthly reimbursement.

MCERA mailed a notice about this premium increase to retirees who currently receive a reimbursement of the Medicare Part B premium in their monthly retirement benefit payment.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if my premium increased?

Take a close look at your Medicare Part B and/or Social Security statements and any letters you received from Medicare or Social Security.

If your Medicare Part B premium is paid through your Social Security benefit you may not have seen a change in your net benefit because, for many people, Social Security increased benefits at the same rate they increased Medicare Part B premiums. Even if your net Social Security benefit is the same, the amount being deducted for Medicare may be different in 2017.

Please note that your monthly MCERA Deposit Confirmation only shows your current amount of reimbursement. It does not reflect the actual premium you owe for Medicare Part B.

How do I let MCERA know about the increase?

Send MCERA documentation from Social Security or Medicare that shows what your Medicare Part B premium was in December 2016 and how it changed starting January 2017. This can be a letter notifying you of the change in premium, Medicare billing statements, or Social Security pay stubs.

Mail the information to: MCERA, One McInnis Parkway, Suite 100, San Rafael CA 94903.
Fax the information to: (415) 473-3612.
Email the scanned information to: MCERARetirees@marincounty.org.

What if I can’t find the documentation?

If your Medicare Part B premium is paid through your Social Security benefit you can request a Benefit Verification Letter from Social Security.
